And what would EA get in return for all this? Zero, so it can only be a net negative for them.

EA likes to control everything. They don't really support the modding community and they don't want others to tinker with their products even if they don't make any money out of it anymore. I mean, that's why they have their own digital distribution platform in the first place. They are very aggressive in the way that they do business. They closed the Battleforge servers because there weren't enough people playing that game to warrant supporting it any further. It doesn't matter to them if the game still has some potential, if they aren't making any immediate profit with it they have no interest in allowing the game to grow on its own.
